Began rehearsing with what will hopefully evolve into the Arty LaVigne band. This will be a chance to take the songs we recorded for Arty’s CD and try them out live. The line-up looks kinda like a Burlington faux-supergroup: Arty (ex-John Tower Group) on vocals and rhythm guitar, me (ex-John Tower Group) lead guitar and occasional backing vox, Mike Scott (The Johnny Devil Band), bass and miscellany and Owen Price (ex-Turkey Bouillon Maffia) on drums.

More to report soon.

“Now What?”

Participated in a concert of “electronic music” last night titled “Now What?”. It was the brainchild of Peter Hamlin and the lineup included his visiting friend Sandy Nordahl (electric bass, keys and electronics), Brian Robison (Theremin and electronics), Kareem Khalifa (electric upright bass, oud and electronics), myself (fretless guitar and electronics) and Peter (keys, computer, harmonica, electronics).

The format was basically different combinations of the above musicians playing pieces that were mostly improvised with varying degrees of success. Since Brian, Kareem and I work together occasionally as a trio, we connected pretty well. And I was lucky to score a solo spot. Samples will be up on the Facebook page eventually.

Earlier in the day Peter, Sandy, Kareem and I were interviewed for a piece about the concert for WRMC. The interviewer was shocked to learn that Sandy and I were meeting for the very first time and planning on collaborating in concert later that evening. It gave us a chance to (try to) explain our approaches to performance and improvisation. An mp3 of the final radio piece can be heard here

4 years ago today…

…was the first day of my second Guitar Craft course in Lebanon, New Jersey. The week that followed continues to have a major impact on the way I approach music and the music that is produced.

Waking Up

Winter is ending. There are small signs of musical life. My dancecard is starting to fill.

Coming in the next month or so:
– Mixing/tweaking/dubbing/conceptualizing the Stone Document disc continues while prepping for a SD show or two.
– Electronic Music Concert with Peter Hamlin, Sandy Nordahl, Kareem Khalifa and Brian Robison.
– Beginning rehearsals with Arty LaVigne and rhythm section.
– Possible appearance with Dayve Huckett.
– Possible appearance with Brian and Kareem.
– Ongoing slogging on my own disc.

The electronic music concert and appearances with Brian and Kareem should satisfy the experimental/avant-garde side of my musical psyche, the stuff with what could become the Arty LaVigne Band the rockin’ side of my psyche and Stone Document the happy-medium between. And now to start practicing!
